RSS Feeds and Pinging
RSS Feeds - Real Simple Syndication that enable newsreader programs and other sites include it as their own content. RSS began as simple way to pass information for one site to another site or program. This actually turned out to be a great way to promote a website and service. Within the last couple of years, web spammers or black hat search marketers have used it as a ranking tool for the search engines. There are actually alot of programs that are built to do this and write the rss feed directly to another site owners webpage ie:duplication of content that enables someone else to rank for your content . Granted, with RSS they will be using your information as content and providing a link to your site which is somewhat okay, but many of the programmers will be scraping your links out of the rss feed and simple using the content. This is where the problem arises as it may be duplicate content in the engines and may cause your page to go into the supplemental index. Those using BlogScheduler, however, will not have this problem as a result of using rss feeds. We have figured out ways to combat this. Pinging - Sending Small Bytes of Data To Check For Connection or To Update A Service RSS became very popular with the advent of Blog and Ping. This became an extremely quick way to get search engines to review and index your content. Although it also became a way for our competeting marketers to scrape your content and reuse it as their own. Currently our stance on blogging and pinging is to do it very carefully or do not do it at all. Possible Problems With RSS Feeds and Pinging For PromotionRSS feeds and Pinging became the latest craze in search promotion over the last couple of years. Granted I enjoy the ability to use real simple syndication to put information from one website to another but the problem arise with duplication of content. Essentially rss feeds that available to other online marketers to utilize as content become an issue with duplicant content throughout the internet and although you may have more links pointing to your site, the amount of duplication increases the dampening factor for search engines. The dampening factor is basically the assumed amount of worth that an engine puts on the value of a site. Duplication of content is only one of the factors that increase the dampening factor, but it is quite simple a killer for those trying to compete with the best of the best. What some have actually done is integrated a content rewriter to help them in there syndication and duplication battles. This seems to solve whole load of possible issues except for 302 Exploit Theft and Scrapers. Fortuneatley, a company known as CopyScape can help you with some duplication battles and currently we are working with a program that helps prevent unautorized scraping, but it is still in beta. |
